The BC FireSmart Committee, in partnership with FireSmart Canada, is offering six Local FireSmart Representative workshops across B.C. between October 2018 and March 2019.  These workshops will provide participants with the knowledge, skills and tools to help protect their communities from wildfire by implementing local FireSmart initiatives.

The free, two-day workshops will take place in the following locations:

October 24-25 - Kamloops

November 21-22 - Castlegar

December 5-6 - Williams Lake   * please note change of location (was Fort St. John)

January 16-17 - Prince George

February 6-7 - Nanaimo

March 13-14 - Chilliwack

The workshops are intended for community leaders, wildfire management staff, emergency management staff, rural or urban planners/managers, Office of the Fire Commissioner/Fire Marshall agency staff and Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) specialists are encouraged to attend.  Local government and First Nations staff and elected officials familiar with WUI issues and FireSmart principles are also welcome.

Space is limited and registration is required.

The workshop provides participants with:

  • An understanding of wildland fire behaviour, and how homes and structures could be threatened
  • The full range of FireSmart mitigations for reducing wildfire risk in the WUI
  • Strategies to aid residents in working together to reduce wildfire risk on the neighbourhood scale
  • Communication tools required to recruit, inform and motivate residents to take collective actions to reduce potential for wildfire losses.

The thirteen modules of FireSmart material cover everything from WUI ignition information to the FireSmart Canada Community Recognition Program. The Community Resiliency Investment (CRI) Program will also be described.
