In the 1950s emerged the concept of the shuttle that could be used repeatedly. At first, most of the design that came up was the plane that consists of two parts. The first part is a rocket that serves as a key driver for takeoff. The second part is the orbiter or the orbiter that could break away from the main rocket when it reaches a certain height and then move on to the orbit.

Bell Aircraft (USA) designed the “Bomi”, this is a two-part design, but the designs were never built due to cost reasons. During the late 1950s-1960s, America has conducted a series of tests. The results of this test is very valuable, because it provides information about the rockets that fly with wings and could not return to the earth because it is too hot and burned.
Tests were always conducted to find a model aircraft capable of facing these problems. Problem was solved when testing of fixed-wing aircraft delta (triangle) dropped from bomber aircraft and shows the problem is resolved back to earth.
In the year 1970, NASA (the space agencies of the United States) began a study in engineering for the space shuttle that can be used multiple times. Various forms of design are made and studied, ranging from a manned rocket booster that can be used multiple times until the aircraft with a rocket booster orbiter. Finally agreed orbiter fuel tanks are placed outside, so that the orbiter could be made smaller and save money. Unmanned booster replaced with unmanned and the orbiter is not equipped with jet engines, because the test showed orbiter capable of landing without engine power. In the year 1972, the United States President Richard Nixon, announced that NASA should move forward and build ulng-shuttle flight.
The first test shuttle United States conducted by the orbiter Enterprise, but not up into space, only in the atmosphere. New in April 1981, Columbia was flown into space
